THE ambulance rushing Nelson Mandela to hospital broke down on the way, it emerged yesterday.

The breakdown details were revealed as unconfirmed reports said Mr Mandela has lost 50 per cent of his kidney and liver function. He also now apparently has a bleeding ulcer, and has not opened his eyes for days.

The critically-ill ex South African president was stranded at the side of a motorway in the cold for 40 minutes.
